Your search for the best hardwood floor vacuum can be smooth.
Since you’re looking for a substitute for brooms and dust mops, carpet-cleaning vacuums won't do the trick. Hardwood floor vacuums have some specific features which make them ideal for wood floors.
And what are those features, I hear you ask?
First up are the rubber wheels which are always better quality than plastic. Next, since you don’t want your brush to scratch the hardwood floor, a revolving brush is a must. Finally, attachments such as microfiber or softer bristles than can easily sniff dust are also worth a look.
Feeling lost in the jargon? Don’t know where to start? Don’t worry, here is a list of vacuums that are friendly for wood floors.

So, what can we gauge from this table? Two things.
First, if you want a vacuum which, in addition to cleaning hardwood floors, can also hold its own on stairs, go for a non-robotic, lightweight, upright vacuum. They are easy to carry, are maneuverable, and slalom around furniture with ease.
Second, if you have you or someone else in your house is suffering from allergy and asthma, you may want to choose a cleaner with a HEPA filter. HEPA filters do not let trapped dust/dander escape into the atmosphere, making them friendlier for people with respiratory problems.
1. Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional NV356E - Best Overall
As a pet power brush or even a crevice tool, its 13.7 pounds is anything but lightweight. That said, the weight comes down once you remove the canister from the base.
Thanks to its excellent cleaning power, the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional NV356E vacuum won’t leave anything behind on a wood floor. Since it is the best all-around vacuum, it will also do well on carpets.
Starting with the standout features, we have to say this model has plenty of them. Look, for example, at the hard-floor attachment and two microfiber pads. When used in unison, this duo will make picking up dust and grime a cinch for your cleaner.
The NV356E is a 2-in-1 model, as it allows you to remove the canister from its base while also working as an upright model. This feature has particular importance if you want to tackle cracks and crevices since they are impossible to clean using your average vacuum.
To make sure the environment surrounding the device remains clean, this Shark boasts complete-seal technology. Add it to the HEPA filter which prevents allergens from escaping, and you have a seriously great product on your hands.
Making it easy to maneuver is a couple of smooth-gliding wheels specially made for hardwood floors. Similarly, if you want to use it as a dusting brush, you’ll get help from its swivel steering. If you want to control the suction power, just tighten the collar located around its handle.
As a pet power brush or even a crevice tool, its 13.7 pounds is anything but lightweight. That said, the weight comes down once you remove the canister from the base.
Even as a pet power brush, the features of this Shark are sublime, to say the least. Add to it the warranty that it offers and there is little if anything wrong with this vacuum.
2. Dirt Devil Power Air SD20505 - Best Budget
Coming at less than $50 – which makes it an inexpensive stick vacuum--the Dirt Devil Power Air SD20505 will relegate your brooms and dustpans to the annals of history. It is optimized for hard floors and quick wood touch-ups, meaning it will positively impact your cleaning routine.
Though there are many features which make a vacuum easy to maneuver, weight is undoubtedly the most important. Since the Dirt Devil weighs only 6.7pounds, it is a cinch to maneuver.
One of the biggest strengths of this cleaner is its wide cleaning path. Its head covers a whole 11 inches which means a single swipe can cover the whole area. It saves the overall time and the energy you’d otherwise need to spend to vacuum large spaces.
As its sub-$50 price tag may have suggested, there aren’t a lot of features to offer in this model. That said, the basics are done pretty well. Take, for example, the 10-amp motor. Designed to power through messes, it is supported by a 20ft power cord to save you from switching outlets.
Often when we clean, there are areas which are harder to reach than others. It goes without saying that traditional vacuums are powerless in front of these areas. Not this Dirt Devil, though. Its low profile nozzle lets it fit underneath any furniture for a thorough, quick clean.
For those of you who are fond of clearing curtains, this canister will open with just one press of a button. Similar ease is offered with the dirt cup, as you can empty it with a single touch of a button. All you have to do is to lift the cleaner over trash and press the cap-release button. The dirt and grime will go straight into the dustbin, meaning no bags need to be dealt with.
Especially when you’re trying to pick up pet hair, the fact that this cleaner blows a lot of air to its front side may pose a problem.
If you can grab yourself a couple of earplugs, this model won’t disappoint. It has all the strengths, including a low price tag, which most people look for in a vacuum.
Ever encountered a vacuum which offers Smartphone compatibility? Or even better, one which can be controlled by Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa? That in addition to the fact that it is perfect for almost all types of the flooring?
Shaking your head sideways? It means you haven’t met the little iRobot Roomba 690 yet.
As noted in the buildup to this section, the Roomba 690 is built for all floors. Be it rugs, tile, carpet, or a mix of hardwood, it can deal with almost anything your home may give it. That is in addition to the fact that it can be used for an hour before needing to be recharged.
If you don’t feel like working on a particular day, the Roomba 690 comes in handy. Since it is connected to your Smartphone or voice commands, this model is a cinch to schedule, set up, and control. All you have to do is to sit back and command, the cleaner will do the rest.
Some dust-bunnies, particularly those which go under the furniture and beds, are hard to find. Not so with the easy-to-maneuver Roomba. It stands at just 3.6’’ tall, meaning you can easily maneuver it under furniture and beds.
One notable feature of the Roomba is the four-foot “halo” barrier that it creates. This feature allows you to designate certain areas or rooms which will then be off-limits for the robot. If you have water bowls or pet food on the floor and don’t want the cleaner to knock them over, the “Halo” mode will ensure just that. This mode is particularly useful if you want to protect a select few items while cleaning a wider area.
For a model that isn’t very big, the capacity of the dustbin is an expected shortcoming. You may have to empty it frequently, especially when cleaning a large area.
For the price, the Roomba offers tons of functionality. If you are a person who likes to see Artificial Intelligence in full effect, this is a model you may like.
4. Dyson V8 Absolute Cord-Free Vacuum - Best Cordless
In contrast to other cordless vacuums, the Dyson V8 boasts commendable power and greater versatility for both bare floors and carpets. For homeowners looking to clean an area which is a mix of hardwood floors and rugs, the Dyson V8 might be a top pick.
Look at other handheld, cordless models and you’d hear one particular complaint about them--less battery time. Thankfully, since Dyson uses lithium-ion batteries in this model, it provides an impressive 40 mins of cleaning power on a single charge.
No matter which cordless vacuum you pick, its weight should be light. Since cordless vacuums are to mainly used on stairs, only the lightest models can satisfy the consumer base. Since it weighs only 5 pounds, the V8 does just that.
The Dyson’s dustbin has a capacity of 0.14 gallons which is pretty impressive for a cordless model. The dumping mechanism, which is always Dyson’s great strength, has been tweaked a little. To empty the cup, the red label located on the vacuum’s upper side needs to be released. This will cause the trap door to open, and any pet hair, fibers, or debris will come out.
Making it much more than a hardwood cleaning vacuum, Dyson has provided this model with car, stair, and upholstery attachments. Also coming with the package is a dusting brush and crevice tool, making it an ideal model to reach hard-to-clean areas.
Finally, in an effort to justify its lofty price tag, the Dyson V8 has a direct-drive, motorized, hardwood floor brush. When dealing with huge chunks of debris, this brush will first break them down before picking them up. It means that not even the most vicious dust particles would remain safe from the onslaught of this cleaner.
When a model is offering so many attachments, you should be expecting to pay big bucks. If you aren’t, then the price tag of the V8 might pose a problem.
If you can afford to pay big bucks, not many models can rival the performance of the Dyson V8.
5. Hoover WindTunnel Max UH30600 - Best for Allergies
Need a hardwood floor vacuum that can clean the space without making you sneeze and sniff? If your answer to this question is in the affirmative, you need the Hoover WindTunnel Max UH30600 bagged upright cleaner. Boasting HEPA filter and certified by Allergy Foundation of America, this powerful vacuum is a godsend for asthma and allergy sufferers.
So what is it that makes the Hoover UH30600 vacuum a must-have? For starters, its performance during emission testing. While most cleaners spew dust, dander, and other allergen particles during this phase, this cleaner was having none of that, hence making it ideal for asthma sufferers.
To make sure it doesn’t scrap wood or other hard floors, the Hoover UH30600 comes with a brush roll. The brush roll has an on/off pedal which only operates on bare floors. As soon as you switch to the upright or tool-use position, the brush roll would turn off.
For those of you who clean large areas with your vacuum, the UH30600 comes with a 30-foot cord. If you think that isn’t enough, there is the telescoping extension wand to further extend the reach. And since we are already talking about attachments (telescoping extension wand DOES count as an attachment), there are lots of others offered.
Take, for example, the crevice tool which lets you reach crevices and cracks with precision. Then there’s the dusting brush to clean the dust from furniture. Finally, there’s an air-powered hand-tool which is great for cleaning stairs.
Finally, to showcase its power on the carpet as well as bare floors, its Wind Tunnel 3 Technology comes into play. It creates three separate channels of suction, thus enabling the cleaner to lift and remove both the surface dirt as well as the dirt embedded deep-down.
For a vacuum that claims to be upright, a weight of 15 lbs. doesn’t do the Hove UH 30600 any favors. Then there’s the fact that the HEPA bags which store the dust and need frequency replacing are anything but cheap.
If you have asthma or allergy sufferers in your house, or just want to avoid airborne irritants, you need the Hoover UH30600. Yes, its maintenance cost isn’t small, but when you look at what it will prevent (asthma and allergies), it might not seem so bad.
6. Bissell Zing 4122 - Best Canister
For those of you who want a lighter canister vacuum, the Bissell Zing 4122 deserves a mention. Optimized for wood floors thanks to its rubber and felt wheels, this cleaner makes cleaning floors without marking up the floors a cinch.
It doesn’t matter how strong of a suction control any cleaner boosts, it would be inconsequential if the trash tank isn’t easy to empty. Thankfully, the Bissell Zing 4122 sports an easy-empty tank. To empty the trash tank, all you have to do is hold it over the trash. Since the tank opens from the rear, there won’t be any bits of dust or dander getting on your hands.
Performance-wise, the Bissell Zing 4122 is one of the most powerful canister vacuums you’ll find on the market. Maybe that’s the reason why Bissell has given us the option to adjust the power on this model. That said, since full power is way too much, we’d recommend keeping it at medium for most tasks.
One area where we found this cleaner a bit lacking was on the carpets. Though the floor nozzle has a low profile, it just doesn’t work on carpets. Even when we tested it on low pile carpets, its performance was lackluster. So if you plan on buying it for your carpet, better prepare yourself for vacuuming the same area multiple times.
If you plan on buying a vacuum for carpet flooring, you may want to look at the Shark Navigator NV356E mentioned earlier in this review. The Shark has swivel steering, anti-allergen technology, andbrushroll shutoff – all features which are must-haves for any carpet vacuum.
To finish off, the Bissell comes with a lot of standard attachments. For example, crevice tool, dusting tool, low-pile carpet tool, and a telescoping extension wand come in the package.
Apart from its lackluster performance on carpets, the suction power, as well as the cord length of this model, also leave much to be desired.
At just 9lbs, this model is a cinch to move around obstacles as well as from one room to the other. Provided you don’t intend to use it on carpets, it won’t leave you wanting.
7. ECOVACS DEEBOT N79 Robotic Vacuum - Best Splurge
Be it navigating around furniture or cleaning on hard floors, the ECOVACS DEEBOT N79 excelled and proved to be a smart choice for this review. Therefore, whether you have an open plan home or an intricate floor plan, this robotic vacuum will help.
Starting with its design, the ECOVACS DEEBOT N79 has a circular design with two adjoining bumper walls. More importantly, there are two battery charging pins beneath the ECOVACS which allow the cleaner to go onto its home base to charge.
Turning our attention to how it cleans hardwood floors, the ECOVACS DEEBOT N79 uses a Smart Motion system to detect dander and dirt. There are a few other cleaning modes out there – i.e. cyclone cleaning mode, but the mechanism is same in all of them. For, they collect dust by creating a vacuum.
Let’s talk about its V-shaped brush. When activated on a hardwood floor, it will lift the dirt, in contrast to the brushless motor mode which picks up only debris. Then there are the two spinning brushes which sweep a variety of debris inside the suction area. As a result, when used on hard surface floors, this robotic vacuum leaves nothing behind.
Reading the abovementioned features might have suggested to you that this vacuum is only for hard surface floors. This cannot be further from the truth. Thanks to its multiple cleaning modes, a 3-tier cleaning system, and smart motion navigation, this model is built for multiple floor types.
Though it comes at a reasonable price (a rarity for robotic vacuums), when it came to removing pet hair, the performance of this upright vacuum wasn’t that great.
When it comes to powerful carpet and hard floor cleaning, not many vacuums can meet the performance of ECOVACS DEEBOT N79.
8. Shark Lift-Away Professional (NV370) - Runner-up, Best Value
Though mentioned as a runner-up, the Shark Navigator NV370 can clean your wood floors with as much effortlessness as the abovementioned Shark Navigator NV356e. That said, there’s a reason why it wasn’t deemed the winner by our experts.
Starting with its superb suction power, it’s safe to say that this model oozes power. Due to its gentle deep clean technology – and a mammoth power intake of 1200 watts--this Shark makes cleaning hardwood floors a cinch.
As for bare floors cleaning, especially the ones which contain a lot of dust, the NV370 has two features to offer. The first of those is the anti-seal technology which keeps allergies/allergens at bay. Second, to keep dust levels in the ambient air in check, it uses a HEPA filter to trap 99% of dust and dander inside.
Compare it with the above mentioned Shark NV356e, and there’s one particular difference. While the Shark NV356e has a premium brush roll, the NV370 comes with a standard one. It means that the Shark NV356e is easier to maneuver around furniture than the NV370.
That said, since it has been outfitted with swivel steering, the control provided by the NV370 won’t leave you wanting.
Some of the users of this model weren’t particularly impressed with the release button. They were of the opinion that Shark would do well to improve the release button.
Thanks to its 1dry quart capacity dust cap, this Shark collects a lot of dirt and dust without making noise. Add to this the performance it showcases while cleaning your bare floors, and this is a perfect tool for your home.
Throughout this article, we tried to give you a number of cleaning options for your hardwood flooring. From canister and upright to lift-away vacuums, a number of models were covered in our review. However, when it comes to cleaning wood flooring, only one model stands out.
That is the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional NV356E. Being our top pick, this model collects dirt and dander while also preventing scratches. That means that in addition to keeping your wood flooring clean, it also increases its shelf life. What more can you ask for?
